Call for Historical and Genealogical Articles

THEME: African American Lives in Context

The AAHGS Journal cordially invites you to submit articles that address our ancestors’ lives, their homes and neighborhoods as well as employment and recreation. People are more than their birth, marriage, death and burial dates and locations. They lived in communities. They participated in the historical events. They shared their lives with others.

African American Historical Sites

A compilation of African American Historical Sites for each location that is represented by an AAHGS Chapter, as well as those for members-at-large, will provide an overview of African American history in relation to AAHGS membership. The articles can be detailed listings, or comprehensive dissertations on a site. They should include the site name, location, accessibility, historical significance to African Americans, historical commemoration and marker details, if any, along with information that places the site(s) in context with everyday life.

African American Life

What were our ancestors lives like? What was a typical day for them? What events influenced them? Step into their shoes and what do you see? Understanding their lives and surroundings is key to tracing their family lines. The reason why a family migrated and where they relocated was influenced by events. Where and how you lived affected your courting distance and whom you married. Social movements of the period changed lives and sometimes separated families. A synopsis of an ancestor’s life in a settlement or region, a family’s migration story or relatives’ experiences in the industrial, labor, civil rights or religious movements is a potential article topic. The submission should include references, such as endnotes or a bibliography.

Deadline Date

June 1st is the deadline for submittals. Articles should be submitted per the regular AAHGS Journal article submission procedure outlined in Submission Guidelines. Questions or inquiries can be emailed to the Editor at publications@aahgs.org, with the subject line AAHGS Article Submission, or mailed to Editorial Board, Journal of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, P. O. Box 73067, Washington, D. C. 20056-3067.

Thank you for all you do to maintain history, and promote genealogy.
