Contribute to the AAHGS Ancestral Quilt Project

Each AAHGS chapter is encouraged to participate in the AAHGS Ancestral Quilt Project by submitting a quilt square. The topic of each quilt square should be related to genealogy.

The individual quilted squares (blocks) will be tied together and added to the quilt. The quilt will be displayed during the conference. The quilt will be display at subsequent National conferences in years to come.

Preparation Instructions

  • When cutting material for the square, cut 12.5" by 12.5", so that each quilt square will be 12" by 12" when finished. To ensure that all pieces fit together properly, make sure that finished squares measures exactly 1-foot square.
  • Use 100 percent cotton sheet backing and an inner layer of muslin interfacing or a thin layer of batting. This step is important since the quilt will be a wall hanging.
  • Use light colored materials on the backside of each square.
  • Attach a ribbon (1" wide, 12" long) on each corner of the quilting square (block). These ribbons are how the squares are tied together. Every square MUST have corner ties!
  • Individual quilt squares may be decorated with fabrics and materials; paints; buttons; bows; ribbons; shells; or photo transfers of family pictures. Sign each quilt square on the back side with a permanent marking pen.
  • These instructions must be carefully followed; otherwise, the quilting block will not be accepted for the quilt.

Use this submission form if you are sending in your quilting block.
