The AAHGS Arkansas Chapter


Welcome to the AAHGS Arkansas Chapter.  AAHGS Arkansas was the host chapter to both the 2004 "Tying the Threads, AAHGS 26th National Genealogy Conference and the 2011 "Ties that Bind", 32nd National Genealogy Conference.  Our mission is to bring to light, through research, study, collaboration, documentation and presentation, the History and Heritage of Arkansas people of African descent. Our Motto is “Cultivating our roots by identifying, collecting, documenting, and preserving our African American heritage.”

Chapter Info 


The purposes of this organization are:   

To encourage scholarly studies in local and family history;

To encourage individuals who desire to share genealogical and historical expertise to enhance the heritage of African Americans;

To host workshops and seminars, that present informative speakers on history, genealogy, and cultural aspects of our heritage;

and to support and carry out the objectives and policies of the national society.

Chapter Events 


Quarterly meetings are held in January, April, August, and November. Research outings and workshops are scheduled during alternating months. There are no regular meetings in July or December. However, in December, an annual Kwanzaa/Christmas Brunch is held. 

Meeting times are 10:30am-12:00pm Central Time.  

Meeting Location
The chapter meets in person at the Millie M. Brooks Library.  Millie Muriel Ward Brooks (1932-2005) was a long-time African-American alderman in Wrightsville (Pulaski County) AR.  The library, a part of the Central Arkansas Library System was named for her in 2013.

Meetings are also held by zoom for the convenience of our out of state members.

Chapter History  


The Arkansas Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) was founded in 1997 by a group dedicated to preserving and sharing genealogical and historical research techniques, conducting educational programs, and preparing exhibits. 

Charter Date:  December 15, 1997
Founder - Ronnie Augustus Nichols
Charter Members:  Gwendolyn Allen, *Novella Black* (deceased), Carla Coleman, Mary Davis, Octavia Hill, Tamela Tenpenny-Lewis, Linda McDowell, Ronnie Nichols, Sharon Phillips, Linda Robinson and Gwendolyn Twillie.
