Case Study: Using Various Strategies to Sleuth Margarett Booker's Life in Enslavement and Freedom

March is Women’s History Month, so we shall celebrate the life of Author/Genealogist Kathy Lynne Marshall’s three-times great-grandmother, Margarett Booker, in this virtual event. She lived her first thirty years enslaved in West Virginia, but her last fifty as a free woman.

Enhancing family lore with genealogical documents, DNA, and insights from a genealogy trip, Kathy will share her methods for sleuthing Margarett’s life story. As a bonus, Kathy will share her multi-award winning methods for writing the story for posterity. Remember: When we write our family stories, we right the American historical record.

About Kathy Lynn Marshall:
Kathy Lynne Marshall is not merely a genealogist; she is a historical detective who brings to life the stories of the forgotten. Through meticulous research and a touch of creative empathy, she uncovers the narratives of women, African Americans, and other unsung heroes who have also shaped America. Imagine experiencing history through the eyes of those who lived it—that is the essence of Kathy’s “speculative nonfiction.” However, her contributions extend beyond that. Kathy empowers others to reclaim their heritage by leading workshops and sharing her successful research and self-publishing strategies, enabling anyone to become the author of their own family story.

Kathy has been featured in Sacramento Magazine, The Sacramento Bee, The Sacramento Observer, Sacramento News & Review, and Elk Grove Citizen. She has been interviewed on CBS-TV, Fox40-TV for the annual Genealogy Seminar in Sacramento, as well as on several podcasts. Kathy has delighted audiences at local and national genealogy and writing conferences, including as the keynote speaker in 2024. She has also served as a consultant to West Virginia’s Beverly Heritage Center.

Kathy’s books have received multiple prestigious Book Awards from the Next Generation Indie Book Awards, Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS), Sons and Daughters of the US Middle Passage (SDUSMP), and Northern California Publishers and Authors (NCPA). She is a member of the California Writers Club, NCPA, Elk Grove Writers Guild, Black Women Write, and a lifetime member of AAHGS.

Her alter-ego, Kanika Marshall, is a renowned artist. She has exhibited her Afrocentric welded steel and ceramic sculptures on American Spark-TV, at the California State Capitol, and at fifteen California State Fair Fine Arts Shows. As Kanika Marshall, she also authored a book of fictional short stories titled Dreamscapes Anthology: Where Fantasy, Suspense, and Joy Intersect.

Kathy/Kanika’s books are available for purchase on Amazon, the African American Literature Book Club, and other online booksellers. Her website is: KathyLynneMarshall.com.
