Finding Our Freedom Fighters - Voices of Camp Town

About this event

Did your ancestors fight for the right to vote?
After Reconstruction, Southern states used poll taxes, literacy tests, and grandfather clauses to silence Black voters — despite the protections of the Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Now it’s time to uncover how your family navigated — and resisted — those barriers. Join H-Town AAHGS for a hands-on working session where you’ll:
? Identify ancestors impacted by voter suppression (1799–1910)
? Learn how to locate poll tax and land records
? Explore research tools from the National Archives and Library of Congress
? Build real research skills — live

Bring your laptop. Bring your family names.
Let’s FIND OUR FREEDOM FIGHTERS.

Presenters | Charles Swenson & Tina B. Henderson
The H-Town African American Historical & Genealogical Society is pleased to welcome Dr. Tina Henderson and Charles Swenson as our upcoming featured speakers. Dr. Henderson will share insights from her work with Texas Ten Explorers and a recent collaboration with Charles Swenson on the book Voices of Camptown, highlighting how research, storytelling, and historical inquiry help uncover hidden African American family and community histories. This engaging 30–45 minute presentation, followed by a Q&A session, will inspire attendees to deepen their genealogical research and explore the powerful connections between family stories and broader historical narratives. Join us for an informative and thought-provoking program designed for both beginning and experienced family historians.
