This presentation is designed to showcase the immense genetic autosomal DNA discovery properties that can be realized from using (if you are able), advanced VISUAL PHASING methods as part of your family research efforts. As an active “Genetic Explorer” and one of a 5-member full-sibling group, who also has access to (for research and family discovery purposes only), an army of known close and distant cousins - on both paternal and maternal sides of the family), Jerome has been in position “to see” (first hand) how the process of genetic recombination has “placed its finger on the scale” (if you will) - up and down the line - chromosome by chromosome, to have a profound impact on how much (or how little) matching DNA may be captured and observed between any two or more genetically matching individuals. VISUAL PHASING will be explained, GEDmatch chromosome browser terms will be explained, and a specific chromosome #11 example will be demonstrated as part of this webinar.
About the speaker:
Jerome Spears, Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society (AAHGS) member – Native of Baltimore, Maryland, earned Geography degrees from Morgan State University and the University of Hawaii; over the years, has used his formal training and other life experiences to champion the cause of uncovering and preserving his family’s narrative and history (going back many generations). He is an Historic Sotterley and Susquehanna Plantation descendant, as well as a (Georgetown) GU272 relative, who in 2016, authored a manuscript entitled “I’VE GOT YOUR BACK”, where he chronicled his eight linear ancestral families (in southern Maryland) – rising out from slavery to freedom and beyond. This effort garnered him the esteemed [ AAHGS - Elizabeth Clark-Lewis Genealogy Award ] acknowledging his measured contributions to original African American research. In 2023 he was a featured panelist at the inaugural stakeholders Descendants of Slavery Empowerment Conference at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, in Washington, D.C., and is also featured in three (award winning) short-film documentaries, the first being “Talking and Walking Common Ground”, the second (viewable via PBS) is entitled: “FINDING US”, as well as a third project (via YouTube) entitled: “The Story of Camp Stanton”. He has extensively used DNA (including “Genetic Visual Phasing”) and other advanced methods to find and then successfully contact distant relatives in Africa and other places around the world. His previous national-level presentation appearances include: AAHGS, RootsTech Connect, the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree, and the East Coast Genetic Genealogy Conference. Jerome is also a retired U.S. Army veteran and current Board Member of the Descendants of Jesuit Enslavement Historical and Genealogical Society, who now spends his time researching, lecturing, and discovering remarkable family treasures to some day pass-on to his present and future generations.
