Saying Their Names, Telling Their Stories

In October 1838, a small group of African American Washingtonians founded the Free Young Men’s Benevolent Association. Among their many legacies was Mt. Pleasant Plains Cemetery, which today lies beneath Walter Pierce Park. Please join us SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, AT 11 A.M., at the ANCESTORS PAVILION at the park for “SAYING THEIR NAMES, TELLING THEIR STORIES” to remember the 8,428 people laid to rest at Mt. Pleasant Plains and the adjoining Quaker Burying Ground.
Dr. Rachel Watkins will be our featured speaker. Rachel, who is now at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, is one of our nation’s leading experts on African American cemeteries and repatriation. She has been part of our project at Walter Pierce since its start under Howard University Professor Mark Mack in 2005.

Park facilities: There’s now a single bathroom at the park, but it’s sometimes locked. Restaurants are nearby.
Getting to the park: If you’re using GPS, the address is 2630 Adams Mill Road NW, Washington, DC 20009. Parking is a challenge. The nearest Metro is the Red Line Woodley Park-Adams Morgan-Zoo station. Several buses stop nearby, including the D72, D74, C51, and C53.
