PLR aids its members by demonstrating how to carry out family research through workshops, published materials, and the support of similar endeavors throughout the Chicago metro area. Paricia Liddell Researchers initiatives include their Funeral Program Indexing Project, Surname Index Project, and Veterans Commemorative Project. Chapter History

Harsh Researchers were founded in 1989 at Carter G. Woodson Library in Chicago, Illinois by a librarian, a Certified Genealogist (CGRS) and an educator, a Curator of the Harsh Research Collection and a small group of people who shared a need for sharing resources and methodology in pursing historical and genealogical research.

In March 1990, the organization changed its name to Patricia Liddell Researchers (PLR) in honor of the memory of a faithful member. The organization came together in response to the intensified interest in African American family history inspired by the book, Roots,  by Alex Haley. PLR with the mix of lay, academic, and professional members, gave impetus to locating, collecting, and preserving the availability of unique materials undescribed publicly or held in private hands. Finally, PLR published a variety of record compilations and journals that previously had been shunned by mainstream publishers, thus making the members' research available to all.
