The AAHGS Pittsburgh Chapter


The purpose of the AAHGS Pittsburgh Chapter is to “support the goals and objectives of the national body of the Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society (AAHGS), to encourage historical and genealogical studies related to western Pennsylvania, to promote recognition of historic sites and prominent figures and to encourage preservation of artifacts and objects."

The purposes of this organization are: 

To encourage scholarly studies in local and family history;

To encourage individuals who desire to share genealogical and historical expertise to enhance the heritage of African Americans;

To host workshops and seminars, that present informative speakers on history, genealogy, and cultural aspects of our heritage;

and to support and carry out the objectives and policies of the National Society.

AAHGS Pittsburgh meets virtually on the last Saturday of the month. 

 


Chapter History


In April 1991, a small group of men and women met and organized the Western Pennsylvania African-American Historical & Genealogical Society (WPAAHGS).  The Society received its charter from the National Afro-American & Historical and Genealogical Society in Washington, D. C. at the May 1991 Conference in Washington, D. C.  Executive Director, Roland Barksdale-Hall, and Gladys Nesbit, President, were present to receive the charter. 
 
The founding members of WPAAHGS were Roland C. Barksdale-Hall, Gladys L. Nesbit, Ida Belle Minnie, Sara Dillard Austin, Marian B. Holmes, Ida Mary Lewis, Pam Smoot, George A. Hubbard, Brenda L. Gibbs-Hubbard, Carla D. Hayden and Drusilla L. Hall.
