Welcome to the Sandhills Chapter | AAHGS

The AAHGS Sandhills Chapter

Sandhills Chapter is partnering with Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Fayetteville, North Carolina to host “Juneteenth Soldiers of Northeastern North Carolina” presented by Marvin Tupper Jones on June 19, 2025. We will celebrate the legacy of Black North Carolina soldiers who took part in the 1865 military action in Galveston, Texas. The soldiers’ participation helped enforce emancipation.

The community outreach event will include a Juneteenth historical display as well as a chance to win one of five Ancestry DNA tests.

Sandhills Chapter researches the past, embraces the present, and aspires to ignite a passion to discover ancestors and remember those who served so that we might live in freedom.

Chapter Events

The chapter meets on the 4th Saturday of each month, blending insightful workshops, engaging discussions, and a passion for uncovering the untold stories of our ancestors.

Our chapter is excited to launch several community outreach events! First there will be a hands-on genealogy lab designed to spark curiosity and help individuals explore their family roots. Next, a community picnic to honor and celebrate our family histories. During the holiday season, Sandhills Chapter will offer digital scanning sessions of photos and documents, to help preserve community members’ treasured memories for generations to come!

Chapter History

Sandhills was founded as the Harnett County Historical Researchers around 2014 with a small group of historians researching their family history.

The group became a chapter of AAHGS in 2019.
